We care about more than functioning wind turbines

We are aware of the human responsibility to preserve the planet for future generations. Reducing climate-damaging emissions is our most important goal.  This goal is particularly important to us because our work requires a high degree of mobility and logistics.

Emissions

Deutsche Windtechnik prepares a climate balance sheet for Scope 1 and Scope 2, as well as selected Scope 3 areas in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.  In 2021, we emitted 5.3 tonnes of CO2 per employee (in Scope 1 and Scope 2). Tracking these areas is only the beginning: In the coming years, we will continuously expand the Scope 3 area and develop an increasingly detailed and realistic picture of our impact on the environment.  At the same time, we are working on a continuous reduction in the areas of energy and mobility, and this makes us more sustainable every year in our highly logistical field of work.

Goal: Reduce company-wide CO2 emissions by 5% annually

Energy

We have installed wind turbines or photovoltaic systems at some locations. On balance, we continuously produce more green electricity than we consume. But that is not enough. There are many essential industries that can only act as consumers of electricity. We expect the demand for electricity to rise sharply around the world and are confident that the fossil fuel age will be replaced by the age of electrical energy. Our goal is to save as much energy as possible, and we are looking to obtain 100 percent of the energy we require from renewable sources.

In 2021, 12% of all KWh consumed by Deutsche Windtechnik worldwide was from renewable energy sources.  We will increase this value to 100% by 2025.

Goal: Convert all conventional electricity supply contracts for existing properties to green electricity by 2025

Biodiversity

Global species extinction has reached dramatic proportions.  According to the WWF, more than two-thirds of all larger animals worldwide have disappeared over the last 50 years. We want to make a contribution through targeted campaigns to stop this development.  For example, by planting virgin forest in Germany, which contributes to more biodiversity: In 2022, we planted 300 trees in a reforestation project together with the Plant-My-Tree Foundation in Itzehoe, Germany.

Goal: Annual implementation of at least one measure that contributes to the preservation of local biodiversity (worldwide)

Mobility

The corona pandemic has shown us that we can get by without many business trips. And we will continue to avoid unnecessary travel in the future. Meetings are held via video conference whenever it is possible. Air travel in particular is reduced to a minimum in accordance with our Travel Policy.

At the same time, we are increasingly using resource-saving vehicles. We are turning to climate-friendly means of transport and are open for new technologies. We are testing the use of hydrogen. Hybrid vehicles are used where necessary. We have electric charging stations at most locations. A total of 27 new electric vehicles were put into operation in 2021.  We are expanding that further.

We offer our employees attractive leasing options for e-bikes. We will continue to change our mobility to be more environmentally friendly.

Goals:

  • In accordance with our Travel Policy, flights under 600 km are not permitted.
  • Compensation for every flight within Deutsche Windtechnik
  • Substitution of company vehicles that use conventional drive technology by electrically operated vehicles

Deutsche Windtechnik Repair

Every year, Deutsche Windtechnik repairs thousands of products and components for wind turbines. Mechanical and increasingly also electrical components are refurbished in special workshops at our locations in Ostenfeld, Eggebeck and Osnabrück as well as by various suppliers. Originally, these were primarily components that had been discontinued by the manufacturer, were no longer available and therefore critical. However, we are also increasingly implementing this type of recycling using refurbished replacement parts for other frequently needed components. This enables us to contribute to recycling and reuse and prevent unnecessary waste and production emissions. And by the way, this concept has also proven to be viable from an economic point of view.

Goal: Increase in the proportion of repaired or overhauled spare parts for wind turbines
