Luhan, what inspired your move into the wind energy sector, and what attracted you to Deutsche Windtechnik?
In 2023, I decided to move into the wind industry. In South Africa, I had worked as a technician and later as a project manager in the diesel generator and solar sectors. I wanted to start fresh in a new field and gain hands-on experience directly in the wind industry. I chose Deutsche Windtechnik for several reasons. The most important was the combination of the scale and resources of a large organisation with the close, personal collaboration typically found in smaller teams. I am also motivated by technical challenges, and I appreciate the opportunity to work with multiple technologies.
What excites you most about your new role as Local Operations Manager for the Netherlands?
What I enjoy most about this transition is gaining a broader perspective on the industry. I now see the factors behind quality, productivity, availability, and costs. My role is less focused on direct technical work and more on long-term team and contract management. The main focus is ensuring the availability of wind parks while managing budgets effectively.
You are introducing a new cluster-based approach in the Netherlands. What does this mean for your teams and operations?
The cluster-based approach means that teams will focus more on their specific regions. This reduces travel time and increases efficiency. At the same time, we are actively recruiting in the areas around the wind parks and developing local employees with the required skills. This approach also strengthens team ownership. Technicians work consistently in the same wind parks, which improves efficiency and reduces downtime for our customers.
What are your most important goals for the team, and how do you foster motivation and safety?
One of the main goals for 2026 is to increase efficiency while expanding the organization in a structured way – for example, by reducing travel time for technicians. Another priority is maintaining a positive working environment for the entire team. Motivation develops naturally when the right conditions are in place. A safe, well-organised workplace where people are properly trained encourages collaboration and accountability. Safety and competence are closely linked – without proper training and development, a safe working environment is not possible.
And finally, how do you spend your time outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy travelling with my wife; we have been together for more than ten years. We also have a French bulldog named Louis, and we enjoy taking him for walks and on hiking trips. In addition, I like working on motorcycles in my garage in my spare time.
