On 8 July 2026, our Belgian service team at Deutsche Windtechnik completed a major gearbox replacement on a Vestas V90 turbine in Berloz, Belgium. While such exchanges are standard technical operations, this project marks a significant leap forward for our local service capabilities in the Benelux region.
Building local expertise, step by step
Since 2009, this turbine has reliably delivered clean energy to the region. For the exchange, the original gearbox – previously replaced in 2015 – was swapped for a fully refurbished Hansen gearbox weighing 17.5 tonnes, supplied by Greentech. Highlights of the work, including scenes from the crane assembly and the exchange, were captured by drone.
Efficient execution on schedule
The team operated on a tightly coordinated five-day schedule:
Monday: Arrival and site preparation
Tuesday: Crane build-up and gearbox disconnection
Wednesday: Removal of the old and installation of the new gearbox
Thursday: Reconnection and system checks
Friday: Final commissioning and handover
Thanks to strong teamwork and precise planning, the turbine was returned to full service by the afternoon of July 10, demonstrating impressive project management by the local crew.
A turning point: Benelux teams taking the lead
What truly sets this project apart is the shift toward Benelux independence. Traditionally, major component replacements in the Benelux have required a team of specialists from Deutsche Windtechnik Germany. This time, the replacement was managed under Belgian leadership, with a team consisting of two experienced German colleagues working side by side with two Belgian technicians.
“This project was a milestone for our team. The hands-on experience and collaboration with our German colleagues have given us the confidence to take on future exchanges independently.”
— Brian Hordijk, Project Manager
Our strategic focus is clear: by investing in knowledge transfer and practical training, we are enabling our Benelux teams to carry out complex operations autonomously. This approach increases our responsiveness and flexibility for customers in Belgium and the Netherlands, while also strengthening our long-term position as a truly local service partner.
Looking ahead: next steps for the region
The next gearbox exchange in the Benelux is already scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027. With each project, our regional teams move closer to full independence from Deutsche Windtechnik Germany – delivering reliable, high-quality service that meets the needs of our customers across Belgium and the Netherlands.
