Deutsche Windtechnik retains all of its mechatronics apprentices upon completion of their training

The success of the apprenticeship programme sends a positive message against the shortage of the skilled workforce shortage

Great news for the next generation of service technicians at Deutsche Windtechnik. All eleven mechatronics apprentices have successfully passed their apprenticeship exams, marking the beginning of their careers as fully qualified onshore or offshore wind energy service technicians. This success not only reflects our commitment to training but also sends a positive message to the wind energy sector, instilling optimism about the industry's future.

Well-trained specialists are essential for achieving the German government's planned expansion targets for wind energy capacity. 53 out of our 124 apprentices at Deutsche Windtechnik are training to be mechatronics technicians. In September, 38 more young people will begin their vocational training to become mechatronics technicians at our sites in Bremen and Viöl in Germany.

Training tomorrow's specialists

"Our apprentices are the skilled workers of tomorrow. Their decision to stay with us is a strong indicator for the attractiveness of our working environment and the future security of our industry", said Alena Schäfer, Training Coordinator at Deutsche Windtechnik. "By completing their apprenticeship, the graduate apprentices are continuing a proud tradition: To date, all of our mechatronics apprentices have passed their final exams."

All eleven apprentices completed their training at Deutsche Windtechnik's Training Centre at the Viöl site in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Thanks to their outstanding performance, four of the eleven apprentices were able to shorten their apprenticeship from 3.5 to 2 years.

UK apprenticeship in high demand

Deutsche Windtechnik also trains young adults in Sweden, the USA, and the UK to become qualified wind turbine technicians. After successfully launching the apprenticeship program in the UK in 2023, Deutsche Windtechnik UK keeps extending the numbers of their apprentices: last year, two trainees were brought on board, specialising in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering last year. Now the company has employed their third apprentice who is due to start in August 2024 and will be based in Dumfries, Scotland. Eighty applicants competed for the spot starting in August 2024, with more openings very likely to come in the near future.

The Deutsche Windtechnik UK's four-year program results in an Engineering Diploma (SCQF level 7 qualification). It provides a comprehensive and well-supporting learning programme, including classroom-based learning and on-site hands-on experience guided by experienced wind turbine technicians. Most importantly it also provides an exciting and varied role within our UK DWT Onshore technician team within this fast-paced and growing energy sector.
