Can't slow down: Our technical communicator Gitta opens up the throttle

Gitta Gerken has been part of the team at Deutsche Windtechnik since June 2022. Working in technical communication has enabled her to combine her interests in technology and language for more than twenty years. And that's also true of her personal life: In her free time, Gitta enjoys listening to heavy metal and touring Europe on her motorcycle.

Gitta Gerken has a wide range of interests and knows how to integrate them into her work as well as her personal life. She enjoys heavy metal, travels the world on a motorcycle and enjoys her job as a technical communicator in the area of offshore service.

Gitta, you are a technical communicator at Deutsche Windtechnik's offshore unit. Tell us about your everyday working life.

I'm part of a team of two people. My colleague and I are responsible for creating technical documents, such as work instructions, with a uniform structure and format. To achieve this, we develop text modules and a consistent layout. On the one hand, our goal is to simplify the authoring process. But above all, we also want to make sure our texts can be clearly understood by everyone who needs them. We are also responsible for providing the English translations of the documents, which is a job that I greatly enjoy doing. We are currently working on storing the text modules in a publishing system in an organised fashion. This will enable us to benefit even more from our current work in the future.

How did you get into this field of work?

Expressing myself in a way that is easy to understand and precise has always been important to me, both in German and in English. But I have also always been enthusiastic about technology. That's why I studied international communication with a focus on electronic technology and mechanical engineering in German, English and Spanish. Initially, I worked for a number of years as a technical translator at an aviation company as well as a company in the field of power electronics. Working in wind energy has given me the opportunity to learn more about wind turbines and offshore services every day. This was a completely new field for me until I joined Deutsche Windtechnik. Fortunately, my colleagues here have been very friendly and helpful and have introduced me to the world of wind energy.

Do you work more alone or in a team?

That depends entirely on the task. There are days when I am completely focused on my projects and the documents I am editing. That requires a lot of concentration and I become completely immersed in what I'm doing. But I also often have discussions with my workmate about the best way to express things, because sometimes it's a matter of taste (laughs). We are currently in the process of setting up our publishing system, and that naturally means we have a lot to discuss. Both ways of working have their advantages, and I enjoy both.

Is your passion for technology and language also part of your personal life?

Yes, absolutely! My husband and I are motorcycle enthusiasts. We are fascinated by engines and the power they produce. But that is just one part of it. We love the feeling of freedom that we experience when riding motorcycles. We like to ride around and find a spot in the evening where we can relax at the end of the day. When we go on holidays, I can live out my love for languages and cultures. We have already toured Spain, France, Wales and Scotland with our motorcycles. Every country and its people are truly unique. We have often received support from people who share our passion when we needed help. This has resulted in some very close friendships. For example, when we took our first trip to Wales, my husband and I met an English motorcycle rider on the ferry who asked us if we already had a place to stay that first night. When we said that we were thinking of deciding spontaneously and did not yet know where we were going to sleep, he immediately offered to let us stay overnight at his home, without even knowing us. For me, riding is a way of life and motorcycle enthusiasts are an important community. I've been going to motorcycle gatherings for over thirty years now and have been through thick and thin with the community. By the way, I also feel this kind of bond with people who love heavy metal music.

Interesting! Is there any particular song that really gets you revved up?

I've been a big fan of heavy metal for a long time and have been to many concerts. But there is one song by Iron Maiden that makes me forget the world around me. It's called "Hallowed be thy Name".
